Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
Record Numbers at Upperchurch Night Hike
The fifth annual Upperchurch Night Hike to usher in the Christmas season drew a record participation of about three hundred and fifty walkers to the slopes of Knockalough on Sunday night. This year the usual route had to be altered, due to icy patches on the forestry road leading to the summit. However, the new route proved to be equally attractive and allowed for some brisker exercise over six miles.
Following registration in the local community centre and the performance of some Christmas favourites by a youthful group of singers and musicians the walkers set off for the lookout on the eastern slopes of Knockalough. The long line of bobbing flashlights stretched out along the mountain road to give a strange but attractive vista to match the stars overhead. To the historically aware the scene must have brought to mind the night march of Red Hugh O’Donnell four hundred years ago as his forces marched through the same place through the freezing conditions on their ill-fated journey to Kinsale.
Happily peace, not war, was the theme of this walk and on arrival at the lookout there was an air of conviviality as hot lemonade, mulled wine and mince pies were distributed.
The lights of Tipperary from Templemore to Cashel shone below as readings, reflections, carols and music were rendered under the guidance of Fr. James Purcell. The spirit of Christmas was captured beautifully.
The “Down Your Way” programme hosted by Eamonn O’Dwyer on Tipp FM recorded a “Christmas Special” at the event and this will be broadcast on Thursday Dec. 22nd at 7.00 pm and on Saturday Dec 24th at 10.00 am. Forthcoming Upperchurch events include leisurely cycles over 25 km and 50 km on New Year’s Day and a Valentine’s Day Walk on Feb 12th. The Night Hike organisers wish to thank sincerely all who helped at this years event.
